Computer science, theoretical study, experimentation, and
engineering that form the basis for computer design and use— devices that
process information automatically. Computer science traces its roots to the
work of Charles Babbage, an English mathematician, who first proposed a
programmable mechanical calculator in 1837. Computer science was not generally
distinguished as separate from mathematics and engineering until the advent of
digital electronic computers in the 1940s. It has since sprouted numerous
research branches that are unique to the discipline.
